Northeast India, The Land of Seven Sisters

Northeast India, comprising eight states like Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, and Sikkim, is a paradise of natural beauty, cultural diversity, and adventure. This region, known for its breathtaking landscapes, includes the snow-capped Eastern Himalayas, lush tea gardens, and serene valleys. It is home to unique biodiversity, such as the one-horned rhinoceros and red panda, alongside vibrant tribal cultures with over 200 ethnic groups and festivals like Bihu and the Hornbill Festival.

The best time to visit is from October to May, offering snow-covered landscapes, blooming rhododendrons, and pleasant weather. Winters (October-February) are ideal for safaris in Kaziranga and Tawang’s snow, while spring (March-April) showcases colorful valleys.

Northeast India Travel Tips

Some states (Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, etc.) require Inner Line Permits (ILPs) or Protected Area Permits (PAPs) for visitors.
Air connectivity has improved with airports in Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Bagdogra, and Shillong. Road journeys are common for exploring the region.
Align your travel dates to experience local festivals like the Hornbill Festival (December) or Ziro Festival of Music (September).
Include warm clothing for higher altitudes, rain gear for monsoons, and comfortable trekking shoes.

Northeast India is one of the most beautiful and underrated parts of the country. With its serene and misty mountains, clean rivers, and rich tribal culture, it has something for everyone. Thankfully, recent times have seen a rise in awareness of this beautiful part of the country which is reflected in the increase in the number of tourists all year round. There are various Northeast tour packages and Northeast India itineraries that cover various different places. From the living root bridges of Meghalaya to the peaceful monasteries of Arunachal Pradesh and the colorful festivals of Nagaland, every state has something special to offer. The tea gardens of Assam, Sikkim’s mountain lakes, and the untouched charm of places like Ziro and Dawki make it perfect for nature lovers and travelers looking for something real.

For one of our first trips to the Northeast, we decided on this northeast package from a Navi Mumbai based travel company that encompassed all the aspects we wanted in our trip. A week exploring Shillong, Cherrapunji, Dawki etc is a magical experience and one that should definitely be on your bucket list.

Northeast India itineraries

After this trip, this is my suggestion of a travel itinerary for Northeast India, particularly to Meghalaya.

Day1:
Arrive at Guwahati Airport or Kamakhya Railway Station and head to Shillong enjoying a scenic drive with a stop at Umiam Lake for boating. This is followed by a visit to the famous three-tiered waterfall – Elephant Falls and then Ward’s Lake. The local Khasi thali is a must try!

Day2:
Begin your day enjoying panoramic views of the city from Shillong Peak. Next, you could explore the mystical Mawphlang Sacred Forest, which is rich in biodiversity and steeped in local legends. Visiting the Khasi tribal villages nearby is the best way to learn about the local culture and traditions. You could also visit Laitlum Canyon for serene landscapes.

Day3:
Leave for Cherrapunji – famous for being one of the wettest places on Earth. Here, the Seven Sisters Waterfall and the Nohkalikai Falls are must visits. Followed by exploring the enchanting Mawsmai Caves (famous for their limestone formations).

Day4:
This day would be full of adventures as you trek to the Double-Decker Living Root Bridge in Nongriat village. The hike is absolutely breathtaking as you pass through lush green forests and cross streams to witness this incredible example of bioengineering by the Khasi tribe.

Day 5:
Return to Guwahati and visit the revered Kamakhya Temple, a site of immense spiritual significance. We then enjoyed a delightful dinner cruise on the Brahmaputra River featuring local music, dance, and Assamese cuisine. The local market here is perfect for shopping for souvenirs and handicrafts.

Day 6:
Return journey via train/ flight with unforgettable memories of Meghalaya.

One week in Meghalaya is enough to fall in love with the place — from the waterfalls and bridges to the warm locals and quiet villages. Whether you’re trekking through forests, boating on crystal-clear rivers, or sipping tea in the hills, this trip will charm and rejuvenate you from within.
